Why timing matters in Bangladesh
The first nationwide Bangladeshi toddler survey (38,440 children aged 16–30 months) found autism in roughly 1 in 589 children — higher in urban areas like Dhaka. Yet a Dhaka hospital study found that while over half of parents noticed problems between ages 1 and 3, more than two-thirds received a diagnosis only at ages 4–6.
That gap of two to three years is the single most expensive thing in Bangladeshi autism care: early intervention works best before age 4, and waiting lists are shorter than you fear.
Signs worth acting on by 18–24 months
No two-word phrases by 24 months, or loss of previously acquired words at any age. Limited pointing, showing or sharing interest. Not responding to name by 12 months. Little pretend play (feeding a doll, driving a block like a car). Unusual sensory responses — covering ears at everyday sounds, staring at lights or spinning objects.
One sign alone is rarely a diagnosis. Two or more, or any loss of skills, justifies a screening — which costs one session, not a commitment.
What a screening actually involves
A developmental screening at any listed center takes 60–90 minutes: structured play observation, a parent interview, and a checklist such as M-CHAT-R for toddlers. You leave with either reassurance or a clear next step — usually a full assessment, sometimes direct therapy referral.
